Greeting Hockey families,
The ice is back! Regular scheduled practices will resume this Monday. After a weekend of repairs, the ice has been refrozen, the Zamboni has been run, and the sheet is in fantastic condition.
What Happened?
On Friday night, a cooling tower failed, causing the ice to begin melting. They were only able to keep one compressor running, which is the minimum to hold ice. By Saturday at noon, there was 1/4 inch of standing water on top of the ice. To protect the facility and the safety of our players, we were forced to cancel all weekend activities, including: Friday night 18U and Adult Hockey, all the Mite Jamboree, and public skate.
The Repair Effort
We want to extend a huge thank you to the City, Licia and her staff at the rink, Michael Hering, and Arena Products. This team coordinated a quick solution to get the other cooling tower back online, start a second compressor, and restore the ice. Repairs were made Saturday, and the ice was able to refreeze overnight.
Future Plans
On Monday, the City will meet to evaluate a rapid replacement of the cooling towers. Their plan is to complete the hardware swap without any further downtime. Because the rink is currently running on one tower, they expect to be able to keep the ice frozen during the transition.
