City of Santa Fe Ice Rink to Temporarily Close Through End of July for Repairs and Equipment Protection

Santa Fe, NM — The City of Santa Fe will temporarily close the Genoveva Chavez Community Center (GCCC) Ice Rink through the end of July due to a combination of planned facility upgrades and unanticipated environmental impacts on the ice surface. This proactive  step is being taken to preserve public safety, protect critical equipment, and improve the long-term reliability of the rink.

The closure results from several overlapping factors:

  • Scheduled repair and replacement of facility windows, which will leave the rink temporarily exposed to the elements;
  • High humidity and early summer weather, which have already begun to degrade the quality of the ice surface;
  • The need to protect essential infrastructure, including compressors and mechanical systems that are vital to year-round operations.

We expected the window replacement would have some operational impact,” said Brian Stinett, Recreation Division Director. “But the due to high humidity conditions   it has led to environmental changes that caused strain on the current system. Closing  now allows us to prevent damage to the rink’s infrastructure and come back stronger when all scheduled repairs to the ice plant are complete.”

City staff will use this extended closure period to complete a full slate of preventive maintenance. This includes servicing the compressors, inspecting mechanical systems, and addressing other facility needs to ensure the rink can reopen with fewer future  interruptions.

“We know this is a major inconvenience for residents, athletes, and families who rely on the rink, especially in the summer,” said Henri Hammond-Paul, Director of Community Health and Safety. “But this is about stewardship—we’re making sure the equipment  and facility are protected, and that we can deliver consistent, high-quality service in the long run.”

Maria Sanchez-Tucker, Community Services Director, emphasized the City’s commitment to transparency and community access. “We’re taking this opportunity to invest in the long-term health of the rink and the experience it offers our community. Our goal is  always to minimize disruption and maximize value to the public.”

City officials encourage residents to explore other recreational opportunities at the Chavez Center and through Santa Fe’s many parks and facilities. Updates on the reopening timeline will be shared via the GCCC website and City of Santa Fe social media channels.

Dear Santa Fe Hockey Community,

We're writing to inform you about an unexpected, but necessary, change to our ice programming at the Genoveva Chavez Community Center (GCCC).

The window project started, but due to the early monsoon rains and high humidity, the GCCC and rink staff have made the difficult but responsible decision to remove the ice. This measure is crucial to protect the ice compressors from the challenging environmental conditions and to allow the acceleration of the planned window project.

As a result, all scheduled programming is now temporarily on hold. While the GCCC staff expects the window project to extend into July, they have not yet been able to provide a firm re-open date for the ice.

We understand this news is disappointing, and we share that frustration. We will reschedule Coach Jared's Competitive Edge Clinic as soon as we have clear information on when the ice will be back and ready for use.

The Saturday Morning Hockey Development program is obviously on hold as well. We will send out updates as soon as we have more definitive information regarding the ice return.

Sincerely,
The Santa Fe Hockey Board
