Blue Jackets outscore Cougars 4-2 in hockey
12/19/09
Alex Cloud-Russell delivered the game-winning goal, but Mike Specht was handed the game puck.
Specht, a defenseman, scored one goal and collected two assists, as the Santa Fe Blue Jackets defeated the Albuquerque Cibola Cougars 4-2 in a New Mexico Interscholastic Ice Hockey League match.
"We gave him the game puck," Santa Fe head coach Paul DeVincentis said. "He played a complete game."
Santa Fe (8-0) and Cibola were knotted 2-2 after the second period Friday night in Genoveva Chavez Community Center. Cloud-Russell untied it and added an insurance goal in the third period.
Cloud-Russell's goals were the only shots the short-handed Blue Jackets took in the final period.
"We were down three players, so we had a short bench," DeVincentis said. "But we got better as the game went on. I know Alex got the last two goals, but the most gratifying thing is that it was a team effort."
Jackson Spingler also scored for Santa Fe, while Craig Parry collected two assists and Cloud-Russell, Larson Walker and Spingler had one each.
Goalie Jordan Fuentes recorded 14 saves for the Blue Jackets.
Santa Fe caps the first half of its season Sunday in Taos.
